Private rooms for students
The Studierendenwerk Mannheim is aware that affordable housing is in short supply, especially in university cities. We are therefore making every effort to offer affordable accommodation for students in the Mannheim university region. We are currently planning two new residential complexes to further expand our portfolio. When looking for a room, we recommend that you first apply for one of the rooms in our student residences. However, as experience shows that there are far fewer places available at the start of the semester than the number of applications received, the Studierendenwerk also offers an online private room exchange as an alternative for finding accommodation. Here, rooms, flats and flats from the free housing market are placed with all students free of charge.
Are you a student looking for accommodation?
Then you can look for suitable accommodation right here in our private room list.
Would you like to let your flat to students?
We’d be delighted to hear from you – simply fill in our online form and send it to us.
Notes
Please note that we only provide the platform. We do not check the offers.
We have briefly summarised all the important information below so that you know how everything works.
This is how it works:
- Please send us your flat or room offer via our online private room form – alternatively in writing by post, fax or e-mail. Please note the conditions of participation for the online private room exchange.
- After checking your offer, we will activate it and publish your contact and address details on our website for three months so that students can contact you directly. If you do not wish to do this, you will unfortunately not be able to use the private room exchange.
- If students are interested in your accommodation or room offer, they will contact you directly. You are responsible for negotiating the further modalities.
- Please inform us as soon as your property has been let – preferably by e-mail to: privatzimmer@stw-ma.de
- Of course, you can also contact us in person at the Infothek, by telephone, fax or in writing by post.
- From experience, we would like to point out that student demand is greatest for good, quiet accommodation in a central city centre location.
- Unfortunately, there is little demand for flats and rooms of average quality and/or outside Mannheim.
Tips
How to move safely on the private housing market
- Beware of unrealistically low rents.
- Never make an advance payment – neither in cash nor by bank transfer or money transfer. Another common scam is that the keys to the flat are sent in return for a deposit. Please do not get involved in this kind of approach!
- Only sign a tenancy agreement once you have viewed the flat. If the landlord does not want to arrange a viewing appointment or states that they are currently abroad – hands off!
- Always seek personal contact with the landlord. It is best to call again before viewing the flat. Caution may be advised if the e-mail communication is in poor German or entirely in English.
- The tenancy agreement should always be concluded in writing. It is best to take someone you trust with you for support.
- If you have any doubts, research similar circumstances, names, telephone numbers or key terms, for example at
www.sichere-immobiliensuche.de
www.polizei-beratung.de - In case of suspicion, please also contact the Studierendenwerk Mannheim as the operator of the private room exchange.
- Never send copies of ID cards, personal data or even your bank details to strangers. Your data could otherwise be misused for further criminal offences.
