This is the website of the Studierendenwerk Mannheim.
Here you will find information in plain language.
People who study are called students.
A student also has to take care of many other things while studying.
For example:
- Where should they live?
- How should they pay for their studies?
- Who can look after their children?
- And much more.
People work at the Student Services Centre.
They help students with these tasks.
Students can simply get in touch if they have any questions.
By simply going there and talking to the workers.
They will then get answers and help.
The Studierendenwerk has many tasks:
- It runs cafeterias and canteens.
Students get hungry and thirsty while studying.
A canteen is a place where students can eat hot food during the break. - It manages halls of residence.
A hall of residence is a place where many students can live.
They don’t have to pay as much rent there. - It provides support in financing their studies.
Students receive help and tips on where they can borrow money.
And also how they can fill out the necessary paperwork. - Help with childcare.
Sometimes students also have children. Studying with children can be stressful.
The Studierendenwerk can help and can look after children for a certain period of time.
This allows students to concentrate better on their studies. - Counselling for social and psychological problems.
Sometimes students are in a bad way. Or they have worries and inner problems.
Then you need help. Someone you can talk to.
And someone who can show you a way out. - Help for foreign students.
Many students come from abroad. Some don’t speak German well. But good English.
Studierendenwerk helps these students. There are also people working there who speak English well. Or can provide help in other languages.

This makes it easy to recognise which task is involved.
For example, ‘Food + Drink’ has the colour green.

The Studierendenwerk endeavours to keep the website barrier-free.
Barrier-free means: without obstacles.
This means that everyone should be able to use the website easily.

These are downloadable files.
However, we will gradually improve this.

The Studierendenwerk Mannheim is a service organisation.
It has a social mission. It is a non-profit organisation and is self-governing.
It is financed by its own income.
There are grants from the state of Baden-Württemberg and a semester contribution (Studierendenwerk contribution).
The Studierendenwerk Mannheim is a member of the umbrella organisation Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW).
57 student and student services organisations in Germany have joined together voluntarily.
The association represents the social interests of students.
The association represents the interests of the student unions.
The association supports further education programmes.
The Studierendenwerk Mannheim is a member of the Arbeits-Gemeinschaft der Studierendenwerke Süd-West.
The Arbeits-Gemeinschaft works across state borders.
The working community promotes professional exchange.
